When a middle school student is assigned a research project on pelagic fish she turns to the Internet. She finds a web site hosted by Peter Benchley, author of Jaws, and soon learns that pelagic means, "of the open ocean or seas"…and the adventure begins.

Thirty years ago it was not uncommon to catch 600-pound billfish. Today the average weight is 67 pounds, and they are often captured before reaching breeding age. Threats to pelagic fish include over-fishing, the impact of growing human populations, habitat destruction and the waste of "accidental catches" in nets set for other fish. This program will inspire respect for the "other" giants of the sea.
