This is a sequel to Kontum Diary about Vietnam war veteran, Paul Reed, whose experience in Vietnam has left him with a deep and abiding hatred for the "enemy." Two decades later he gets the translation of a "Vietnamese diary" which he had found on the battlefield. His former "enemy's" words humanize him and he wonders whether he could ever meet him. He meets him and finds reconciliation and forgiveness in their mutual experience together.
The Journey Home is the story of a repeat visit and Reed's successful efforts to bring his former enemy, Nguyen Van Nghia, back to the United States to meet other veterans and to raise money to help restore Nghia's sight from the war injuries. The story takes us from hatred to forgiveness and the healing of deep emotional scars.
